All work Case study — Platform engineering

AnyVan

AnyVan is Europe's largest online moving and delivery platform. I joined the fulfilment side of the business on a leadership track, working on the Transport Provider Portal and its surrounding microservices — the systems through which thousands of transport providers find, accept and deliver work.

Headline contributions

Three decisions that stuck

01 Drove an architectural pivot on provider comms

I authored an RFC making the case for integrating provider communications directly with the central comms platform, rather than through a planned intermediate migration phase — and won agreement across teams. Work-offer recommendations now reach providers by email and WhatsApp.

02 De-risked a multi-country migration

Authored the launch and rollout documentation for a progressive, country-by-country cutover of recommendation traffic to a new work-allocation engine. Identified a material rollout risk around feature-flag granularity between the legacy and new systems, and sequenced a concurrent frontend migration to keep rollout metrics clean.

03 Established a cross-team API contract

Proposed and negotiated a pricing API contract between my squad and the booking platform team — agreed across both teams and now used as the integration boundary for downstream work.

Technical leadership

Raising the bar day to day

Run all team ceremonies and lead sprint refinement; introduced workflow stages adopted by the whole team.

Rewrote a tranche of stories to a consistent standard — behavioural acceptance criteria over implementation detail — raising the team’s specification quality.

Migrated legacy pages to the modern React stack and shipped from week one: provider deallocation flows, journey detail enhancements, third-party fleet ETA integration, and multilingual features (ES/FR).

Worked across a polyglot estate: PHP, Java microservices, a React frontend, Terraform-managed AWS, and CircleCI with ephemeral per-PR environments.

Strategic contribution

Beyond the sprint board

Contributed to executive-level product strategy sessions alongside senior leadership.

Proposed strengthening long-term technical governance, laying groundwork for an architecture decision forum.

Built working relationships with engineering leads across every squad within the first two months.
